The intersection between design and the living world is at the heart of Karen’s work. As a visual artist, Karen has drawn on the 30+ years she spent practicing interior design where she developed a passion for colour, texture, light, form, space & order, and all the nuances in their combinations. Painting has allowed her to explore another avenue of creative expression with the elements of design on a 2-dimensional plane rather than a 3-dimensional volume.
Karen approaches her artwork in a similar manner to designing an interior space. With visual art the “space” is the canvas and the design elements are imagery, paint and art media. Composition of each piece is thoughtfully articulated using the principles of design to achieve a pleasing aesthetic, an equivalent process to the creation of an accomplished interior.
For her representational pieces Karen likes to explore the narrative of street scenes or delve into the details of the organic world using water mixable oils to achieve soft, silky, smooth blending. Alternatively, she works in mixed media for the drama of rich, vibrant colours, varied texture, and the joy of open-ended creative expression.
Karen is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the FCA, Central Okanagan branch. She currently paints in her home studios in Kelowna and Mexico.
